BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- FIBA apologized on Friday for its inappropriate wording in a social media post after China rallied past Japan in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers, which it called "a sneaky win."

"We owe an apology to the Chinese national team, its fans, and the entire Chinese basketball community. The language used in our post about last night's game result was inappropriate," FIBA said in a statement posted on its WeChat official account.

On Thursday, China recovered from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat Japan 87-80, securing its first win in the 2027 World Cup Asian qualifiers.

However, FIBA posted "China with a sneaky win over Japan" on its social media account, sparking discontentment from Chinese fans.

"Team China's victory was earned through talent, effort, and determination. The original post has been removed or edited from all platforms. We wish all the best to Team China for the remainder of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers," the global basketball governing body added.

China will take on Chinese Taipei on Sunday.
