COLOMBO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Saturday activated a contingency plan to manage flight disruptions after airspace closures due to the Middle East conflict that affects regional routes used by airlines.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka said it is implementing a special facilitation program led by Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer Daminda Rambukwella, to support passengers and aircraft arriving in and departing from the country.
SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir have temporarily suspended flights to destinations in affected countries and on routes that use the closed airspace, the authority said. It urged passengers to confirm flight details with their airline or travel agent before traveling to the airport.
The regulator said it prepared an emergency action plan in consultation with relevant stakeholder institutions under the guidance of the minister, deputy minister and secretary of the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation.
It added that Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, in southern Sri Lanka, is ready to handle diverted flights if required and advised the public not to be unduly concerned. ■
